Celebrating Ireland is an all Irish program which embraces Irish history and culture in Story and Song.
Storyteller Marilyn Murphy Meardon
has a partiality for Irish stories - ghost, fool, fairy and trickster, although all Irish stories have a bit of knavery in them. Marilyn been at the trade for some 15 years and will, at the drop
of a shamrock, spin an outlandish yarn.
She is joined by Tom Maquire, an Irish playwright, bodhran player and whisky tenor whose fervor for all things
Celtic reaches well into the Dark Ages. His stories tell of illegal immigration, the plight of tinkers, the peace talks in Northern Ireland and the tenderly romantic.
Also performing is
Phil Edmonds, a native of Killaloe, Country Claire, Ireland, who learned to play tin whistle
in a place where he says: "The backyard was the fields." When he was 14 years old, his family emigrated to
America and settled in South Providence where he still lives. Along with his tin whistle, Phil plays button accordion with great warmth and spirit.
Fiddler, vocalist, harpist and leprechaun,
Mary King, weaves these gifts together with her love of music and Ireland.
The Celtic soul is alive and well in the stories and songs you will hear, and your ears and eyes will smile.
